Kaiju-ya
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located near the Shinkawa Higashi Sluice Gate in Edogawa, bakery Kaiju-ya crafts rustic breads, filled sandwiches, and baked sweets that highlight wholesome grains.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set close to the Shinkawa Higashi Sluice Gate in Edogawa Ward, Kaiju-ya is a small bakery run by a husband-and-wife team whose shelves are lined with unpretentious, understated loaves. Every bake highlights the natural qualities of the dough, leaving an impression with its chewy texture and rich wheaten aroma that deepens with every bite.
Everyday staples include simple round rolls and square pullman-style shokupan loaves. The round rolls are pleasantly firm rather than overly soft, holding up well when sliced open for sandwiches, while the sliced loaves toast to an aromatic, satisfying crunch. Other everyday sweet and savoury varieties, such as raisin bread packed with plump fruit, cheese rolls, and classic melonpan, equally celebrate the quality of the base dough.
On select days, the shop introduces limited items such as a Vietnamese-inspired banh mi sandwich, layering crisp fried chicken breast, namasu pickled vegetables, and coriander inside a crusty French baguette. A selection of baked sweets, including fragrant butter cookies and muffins that make the most of toasted flour, makes it tempting to pick up a sweet treat alongside the bread.
Operated purely for takeout, the cozy shop has neither eat-in seats nor customer restrooms. Payment is cash only, and checking the day's lineup or visiting when the shelves are fully stocked is the best way to make the most of your stop.
